You Are For Me

You Are For Me
by Kari Jobe

"Come and listen, all you who fear God;
let me tell you what he has done for me.
I cried out to him with my mouth;
his praise was on my tongue."
(Psalm 66:16-17 )
s

When Moses was 120 years old, he told the people of Israel that he would not be going into the promised land with them. Instead, Joshua would lead and they would cross over and posses the land just as God had originally promised. Even though Moses would not be leading the way, one thing remained the same: God still promised, “I will never leave or forsake you.” Even though the promise of God was about to be fulfilled, the method in which God had chosen was not quite what some had hoped. (Deuteronomy 31:1-6)

How many times in our lives have we prayed and God answered, but not quite like we had hoped? The good news is that God is faithful to his Word. The “not so good news” is that it may not look like we had originally hoped. Through it all, it’s good to know that He is always for us!

I have always loved music. When I was only three years old, I would stand on the stage with my parents, who were traveling evangelists, and sing my little songs about Jesus. Later, while in the youth group of our church, I began to sing with my dad in our praise group. I remember during nights of worship how we would seek the face of God and the His power would fill the room. The atmosphere was electric. We would see people healed and absolutely changed by His presence. I knew then that I wanted to be connected to worship for the rest of my life.

During my college years I had the privilege of being involved in various worship groups and even recording on other people’s projects. During those years I would still gather with my friends for nights of worship we called “Throneroom.” Every time we met, the Lord was there. It was during those years that I began to write. My songs came out of my journals and my time alone with God. Although I had offers to record a CD of my own, the Lord kept saying that I should wait. It’s in those waiting times that the Lord does so much inside of us. We know that He is faithful to His promises, but sometimes He has a different outcome in mind. Looking back, I can now say that the timing of the Lord was perfect.

After almost 10 years of waiting to record my first solo project, I recently released the CD with Gateway Create and Integrity Music. The CD is filled with songs from many hours alone with the Lord. The song “You Are For Me” was written at a time when I was discouraged and struggling with loneliness. My cries went up before the Father, then the words from my heart made their way onto the page and were set to music. I believe that it has a special anointing to touch the hearts of those who are crying out to God in similar situations.

Recently, on a trip to Honduras, my dad played the Spanish version of that same song for a room full of women at a maximum security prison. As the words of the song sank into their hearts, many of them began to weep. The presence of the Lord began to breathe hope into their hearts again. Some of them caught a glimpse of Jesus and His love for the first time. After the song, many of the ladies prayed to receive Jesus. We were told by those who minister to them week after week that the most hardened criminals were among those who were broken. I am so thankful that the Lord touched their hearts. It’s all about the presence of the Lord.

Be encouraged today. The Lord hears your cries. His promises to you are faithful. His timing may be different than yours and His method may not look like you thought it should, but He is still the God who hears and answers prayer. Above all remember, “He is for you.”

This Week
Examine your expectations of God’s promises. Are you boxing Him in to fulfill them by your design and your timing?

Prayer
Lord, I let go of my expectations and efforts to rush things and see Your promise fulfilled. You have the divine plan. I will trust Your timing and methods of fulfilling Your word because You are for me.

Fearless Living

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear,
but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
2 Timothy 1:7

Fearless Living
with Edward John
.

Fear is a common human experience. Everyone struggles with it, though not all fear is equal. Some types of fear can paralyze us, keeping us from walking in the abundant life God desires for us.

Four fears that can paralyze are fear of man, fear of failure, fear of loneliness and an unhealthy fear of God.

The fear of man keeps us more concerned with what people think about us than what God thinks. Every time we wonder if we can measure up to someone else's standards or think in terms of "have to" in order to please someone other than God, as though their opinion of us is determines our value, we have let the fear of man rule us. God is the only one who can determine our value and He's already shown how much He values us by sending His Son to die on the cross for us.

Proverbs 29:25 says, "the fear of man brings a snare, but he who trusts in the Lord will be exalted." God wants us to trust Him with everything in us. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). When we shift our trust entirely on the Lord, we have humbled ourselves. God's promises to then lift us up (James 4:10).

Loneliness tries to take away from our lives, but that should not necessarily be the case. Consider King David. He spent a lot of time alone before the prophet Samuel anointed him to be king. Then he spent time on the run from King Saul because Saul wanted to kill him. King David's times of loneliness pushed him closer to God until he ultimately became known as "a man after God's heart" (1 Samuel 13:14).

Moses also spent considerable time alone in intimate times with God. It was through that very intimacy we received the Ten Commandments. When we are lonely, we are at a place where we can either run away from God, straight into the arms of depression, or we can run to God and experience His presence. The best place to hear God is in a secluded place with no distractions. Jesus knew this, so he sought solitude. The night before his crucifixion he withdrew from his disciples so that he could receive the grace needed to finish the task set before him (Matthew 26:36-46).

God promised to never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 11:5-6). Jesus said that he will be with us, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:19-20). Loneliness is not something to fear. Instead, we can embrace it as a gift from God that draws us closer to Him.

In much the same way, failure is not something to fear. Proverbs 24:16 says that though a righteous man may fall he gets up. He doesn't stay down. The fear of failure is rooted in the belief that it is up to us to accomplish something and that we will face some sort of punishment if we are unsuccessful. But God says that it is by His Spirit that things are accomplished (Zechariah 4:6).

When we align our lives with the Word of God, failure is no longer an issue because God sees our heart. Men judge by externals, but God does not (1 Samuel 6:7). He knows our frame, that we are dust, and yet He still has perfect love for us (Psalm 103:13-14; 1 John 4:17-19). King David knew what it meant to struggle with fear. Frequently he asked the question, "what can mere man do to me?" (Psalm 53:3-4) Yet throughout everything he trusted God.

The fear of man, the fear of failure and the fear of loneliness all have to do with how we see man. The fear of the Lord has to do with how we see God.

Scriptures refer to the fear of the Lord many times. In Deuteronomy the Israelites were commanded to fear the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:13). But the word "fear" doesn't mean that we are to associate dread or horror with God. When we do associate horror with God we are dealing with an unhealthy fear of God.

We are to honor the Lord above all others. We are to respect Him. Above all else, we are to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Matthew 22:37; Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27).

The love of God, which we reciprocate because He loved us first, is the key to overcoming the fear of man, the fear of loneliness and the fear of failure. If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:30-32)

This Week
Ask the Lord to show you where you have let fear rule in your life. Reject fear and ask the Lord to cleanse you and empower you to live fearlessly. Search the Gospels for all of the times Jesus says "fear not."

Prayer
"Heavenly Father, thank you that I need not fear because you are with me and for me. Please let me experience the bold power of your love in a way that breaks the shackles of fear in my life.

The Lord Will Fight For You

Lord, battle with those who battle with me.
Fight against those who fight against me.
Pick up the shield and armor.
Rise up and help me.
Lift up your spears, both large and small,
against those who chase me.
Tell me, "I will save you."
Psalm 35: 1-3

READ Psalm 35:1-36:12

SITUATION David begged God to rescue him from those who sought his demise. He recognized the wickedness of his enemies and asked God to intervene.

OBSERVATION God fights on behalf of his children.

INSPIRATION You feel unsafe, unsure?

You don't like to be alone.

Your frightened, and fear limits the joy you experience in your life. You're trapped in an adventure less existence. What are you afraid of? Pain? Rejection? Are you afraid of making a mistake? Of getting hurt? Of being robbed or killed? Or of getting a disease?

. . . . Did you know I am never afraid, worried, frenzied or never driven with terror? Did you know that your Lord is at peace always? Did you know my Spirit -- the same as is in Me -- lives in You?

I have built a wall of protection around you so that the invisible dragons of the night will not harm you . . . I save you from the troubles and dangers of the daytime, I am for you. Who can be against you?

But you worry.

You worry because of past experiences when you were hurt. You are afraid to be hurt again. You are afraid I won't keep my word. You are afraid I don't care about you. but I do care. Every hair on your head is numbered.

. . . See Me surrounding your and keeping you from evil. See Me bringing you up out of a horrible pit, lifting you gently out of the miry clay of fear and worry. See yourself completely safe, with your feet upon a rock, established in the ways of God. (From His Thoughts Toward Me by Marie Chapian)

APPLICATION When you face battles in life, write them in a prayer journal. Wait on our Defender and record his victory in your journal. This will build you faith.

EXPLORATION Fighting--

At the Red Sea: But Moses answered (his people) , "Don't be afraid! Stand still and you will see the Lord save you today. You will never see these Egyptians again after today. You only need to remain calm; the Lord will fight for you." Then the Lord said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Command the Israelites to start moving. Raise your walking stick and hold it over the sea so that the sea will split and the people can cross it on dry land. I will make the Egyptians stubborn so they will chase the Israelites, but I will be honored when I defeat the king and all of his chariot drivers and chariots. Exodus 14:13-17

When Goliath looked at David and saw that he was only a boy, tanned and handsome, he looked down on David with disgust. He said, "Do you think I am a dog, that you come at me with a stick?" He used his gods' names to curse David. He said to David, "Come here. I'll feed your body to the birds of the air and the wild animals!" But David said to him, "You come to me using a sword and two spears. But I come to you in the name of the Lord All-Powerful, the God of the armies of Israel! You have spoken against him. Today the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll kill you and cut off your head. Today I'll feed the bodies of the Philistine soldiers to the birds of the air and the wild animals. Then all the world will know there is a God in Israel! Everyone gathered here will know the Lord does not need swords or spears to save people. The battle belongs to him, and he will hand you over to us." 1 Samuel 17:42-47

He said, "Listen to me, King Jehoshaphat and all you people living in Judah and Jerusalem. The Lord says this to you: 'Don't be afraid or discouraged because of this large army. The battle is not your battle, it is God's. Tomorrow go down there and fight those people. They will come up through the Pass of Ziz. You will find them at the end of the ravine that leads to the Desert of Jeruel. You won't need to fight in this battle. Just stand strong in your places, and you will see the Lord save you. Judah and Jerusalem, don't be afraid or discouraged, because the Lord is with you. So go out against those people tomorrow.'2 Chronicles 20:15-17

"Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, assemble there. Our God will fight for us." Nehemiah 4:20

"Be happy with those who are happy, and be sad with those who are sad. 16 Live in peace with each other. Do not be proud, but make friends with those who seem unimportant. Do not think how smart you are. If someone does wrong to you, do not pay him back by doing wrong to him. Try to do what everyone thinks is right. Do your best to live in peace with everyone. My friends, do not try to punish others when they wrong you, but wait for God to punish them with his anger. It is written: "I will punish those who do wrong; I will repay them," says the Lord. But you should do this: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. Doing this will be like pouring burning coals on his head." Do not let evil defeat you, but defeat evil by doing good." Romans 12:15-21
