You Need Power

You Need Power
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
s

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

D.L. Moody was a shoe salesman until God moved him into a full-time preaching ministry, often in the streets of Chicago. There came a point in his journey with God that he realized he needed more in his life than what he was experiencing. "At the close of the Sabbath evening services I remember two holy women they would say to me, 'We have been praying for you.' I said, 'Why don't you pray for the people?' They answered, 'You need power.'

'I need power?' I said to myself. Why, I thought I had power. I had a large Sabbath school and the largest congregation in Chicago. I was in a sense satisfied. But then came these two godly women who prayed for me, and their earnest talk about "the anointing for special service" set me thinking. I asked them to come and talk with me, and we got down on our knees. They poured out their hearts, that I might receive the anointing of the Holy Ghost. And there came a great hunger into my soul. I knew not what it was. I began to cry as I never did before. The hunger increased. I really felt that I did no want to live any longer if I could not have this power for service. I kept on crying all the time that God would fill me with His Spirit. Well, one day, in the city of New York - Oh, what a day! I cannot describe it; I seldom refer to it; it is almost too sacred an experience to me. Paul had an experience that he never spoke for fourteen years. I can only say, God revealed Himself to me, and I had such an experience of His love that I had to ask Him to say His hand.

I went to preaching again. The sermons were no different; I did not present any new truths, and yet hundreds were converted. I would not be placed back where I was before that blessed experience if you would gave me all Glasgow.*

Prayer
d
Good morning, Lord. Thank you for this absolutely beautiful day. Father, I need for You to please tell me something. Do I place too much emphasis on my wants? my relaxation time? my family time? my job? anything? Please show me, help me know in my spirit, if there are any "rights" I need to relinquish that may be hindering my freedom to experience Your love and grace. Please help me to balance my time and activities, my desires and needs, my work and play; every area of my life. Father, may You receive ALL the glory. In Jesus' Holy name I pray, Amen.

A Message to Moab - Jeremiah 48:11-13

"The people of Moab have never known trouble.
They are like WINE left to settle;
they have never been poured from one jar to another.
They have not been taken into captivity.
So they TASTE as they did before, and their SMELL has not changed.
f
"A time is coming," says the Lord,
"When I will SEND people to pour you from your jars.
and smash her jugs.
The people of Israel trusted that god in the town of Bethel,
and they were ashamed when there was no help.
In the same way Moab will be ashamed of their god Chemosh."

SITUATION Since the Book of Jeremiah is not arranged chronologically, this section of Scripture would historically follow the events of Jeremiah 25. Jeremiah anticipated Nebuchadnezzar's conquest (25:9).

OBSERVATION God not only ruled Judah, but all nations. God doesn't just rule over Christians, but over the whole world.

INSPIRATION You and I are called upon, at times, to announce coming judgment. There is no way that we can be faithful to God and avoid the judgmental aspects of our ministry. We must recognize that sin must be dealt with. It is impossible to be biblical and at the same time sugar-coat the message of the Gospel. The Gospel cuts right into the heart of man and into his sinfulness. As Oswald Chambers has put it, "If there is a no tragedy at the back of human life, no gap between God and man, then the Redemption of Jesus Christ is 'much ado about nothing.''

. . . When you and I are called upon to minister for God, one part of our message has to be to pluck up and to break down, to overthrow and destroy, to announce the coming judgment of God against sin.

Jeremiah's message did not end there. He was also called upon to build and to plant. There was also the message of mercy. Whenever God announces judgment, there is always the great truth that righteousness and peace have met together. There is the merciful aspect of God. Mercy and truth have kissed each other, because those two things come together in the Cross of Jesus Christ.

. . . You and I are called upon, in our ministry in witnessing to others, to make clear the judgment of God against sin and the mercy of God who has provided the way out of that sin. (From Words of Fire, Rivers of Tears by David M. Howard)

APPLICATION Is there someone God wants you to witness to? As he brings people into your life, take time to get to know them. Let them get to know you. As you become friends, ask God to show you the right time to share Christ with them. And let your life portray the truth of what you say.

EXPLORATION God's Power -- Job 38-41; God's Justice and Righteousness -- Romans 3:9-25. Christian Witness--Romans 8:35-39; Ephesians 3:20-21.

Power Repentance

Power Repentance
Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman

"When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, 'Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!'" (Luke 5:8-9).

Are you playing Christianity or having an encounter daily with the living Christ? Peter was going about his work-day trying to earn a day's wage in his fishing business. Jesus showed up on the shoreline after they'd had a bad day. They had caught no fish.

Jesus asked to use his boat by casting off the shoreline in order to teach the people. After Jesus used Peter's business for His purposes, He turned to Peter and suggested he throw his nets out again. Peter, somewhat reluctant and argumentative, said in his hallmark attitude, "Been there, done that Master ... you don't know what you're talking about." (my paraphrase). How many times do you and I do the same thing? "Jesus doesn't care about my work life. He only cares about the orphans and the poor," we say to ourselves.

When Peter's nets are filled with fish—a strange awareness comes over him. "When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, 'Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!'" Peter was overwhelmed at the personal love and power that was directed specifically at his need at the moment—his ailing business. It was more than he could handle. "God even cares about the condition of my business," Peter must have thought.

Whenever we move from playing Christianity to having a genuine encounter with the living Christ, we are confronted with our own humanity and sin compared to the unmerited love and power of Jesus Christ that is personally directed to us. It should bring us to our knees. It is an awesome experience to transition from religion to relationship. Life is never the same when you have a personal encounter with our Savior.

How about you? Do you need a personal encounter with Jesus today? Ask Him to reveal His power in your work today.
